The wineries are booked one by one
Colchagua is spread between Santa Cruz, Apalta and Lolol, and the wineries run on schedules and quotas, not open doors. Book the main visit before choosing where to sleep and build the rest of the day around it.
Each winery has its own channel: Montes sells only online, MontGras asks for two days' notice for lunch, Casa Silva requires advance booking for all its tours and Viña Santa Cruz is booked by phone or email. Viu Manent also sells online; ask whether it receives visitors without a reservation, and do not count on turning up and finding a place.
Without a car, the valley shrinks
Santa Cruz is the base and has a bus terminal with services from Santiago. The wineries are far from the terminal and from each other: Apalta, where Viña Montes is, about 12 km away, and Lolol, where Viña Santa Cruz is, about 33. Casa Silva is in San Fernando, another town: ask for the distance and the transfer from Santa Cruz.
Ask the winery how to reach Lolol by public transport before planning the day on that assumption. The Montes tour that is published does not include transfer.
The Museo Colchagua, in central Santa Cruz, is the stop you can make without a car.
What there is on each side
Viña Montes, in Apalta, has a tour with tasting and a cellar visit and, at the far end, a seven-course lunch with seven wines. That lunch is published with a "from" price: confirm before booking whether it is per person or per group. Montes' Ícono, Andes Deluxe and Sunset tours have their own conditions: confirm the booking and transfer when choosing them.
Viu Manent offers a carriage ride with tasting, at fixed times. In rain there is no carriage and the visit stays in the room and the tasting. MontGras serves lunch at the winery, with no cancellation.
Viña Santa Cruz, in Lolol, has the wine tour and a cable car over the vineyard up to Cerro de las Culturas, with an astronomical museum. Casa Silva, in San Fernando, tours the century-old cellar.
The harvest starts in February
In February MontGras opens Mi Cosecha, a grape-stomping experience that only exists while the harvest lasts and has limited places. Ask the winery when it ends. If you travel then and want to stomp grapes, book ahead, as the winery itself asks.
How to get there
From Santiago you get there by Ruta 5 Sur and route I-90, or by bus to Santa Cruz.
