Maule Valley

A valley of wineries visited by reservation, spread between San Javier and San Clemente, about 22 km from Talca.

Some links are affiliate links: if you book through them the site earns a commission, and it costs you nothing extra.

A valley you do by car and by phone

The Maule cannot be improvised. The wineries receive visitors by reservation or with prior arrangement, and the days vary: Gillmore only opens on weekdays, Balduzzi opens Monday to Saturday and Terranoble runs tours from Monday to Saturday. Sunday is the empty day.

If your only free day is Saturday, the plan still works with Terranoble and Balduzzi; if it is Sunday, do not build wineries into that day: Balduzzi and the Talca museum do not open, and the others ask you to arrange beforehand.

The notice required varies too: one working day in advance at one winery, a minimum of two people at another, a call to arrange it at the third. Write or call before leaving Talca.

Talca is the base, and the wineries are in other towns

The train from Estación Central reaches Talca, and it is a way to get there without a car. The wineries are in other towns: San Javier, about 23 km away, where Balduzzi and Gillmore are, and San Clemente, about 22 km away, where Terranoble is. Ask at the winery when you book how to get between Talca and those towns without a car.

With a car, the visit is built by town: San Clemente one day, San Javier another. Terranoble has a getaway for two with a night in Talca.

What to visit

Gillmore, in Tabonkö, takes in the old dry-farmed vines, the cellar and the variety garden, with a guided tasting. Arrange it beforehand by phone or email, and do not go on a weekend.

Casa Bouchon tastes four Gran Reserva wines and runs a half-day tour to Cerro Mingre. When you book, ask which town it is in and which days it receives visitors. Balduzzi is 500 metres from Ruta 5 Sur, so it fits in on the way: confirm the price and the tasting by phone before going.

The Museo O'Higginiano y de Bellas Artes, in central Talca, offers guided visits. It closes on a long list of public holidays, so confirm the day before counting on it.

How to get there

From Santiago you reach Talca by Ruta 5 Sur, or on the Estación Central train, which continues to Chillán. The railbus to Constitución leaves Talca along the bank of the Maule River.
