A valley with trails all year round
Valle Las Trancas is a mountain village in the commune of Pinto, on route N-55, a few kilometres before Nevados de Chillán. It has lodging, restaurants and activity operators, and the trails start here.
In summer there is trekking, mountain biking and enduro, a bike park, horseback riding, canopy, canyoning, rock climbing and yoga. In winter, skiing at Nevados de Chillán, snowshoeing, snowmobiles and ski touring. Each operator charges its own, so ask the price when you book.
The trail to the viewpoint is a short walk: it leaves from the main street, has a gentle slope and is open all year.
Laguna Huemul
The trail to Laguna Huemul starts at Shangri-La. Before setting out you must register at the Carabineros station in Las Trancas, and it is not an optional step. The difficulty is medium-high and there is loose rock: go with a guide.
Without snow the trail is clear from December to April. In winter it is under snow and can only be done with snowshoes.
Mountain notices
The mountain changes state: check how the volcano and the trails stand before going up, and register your outing with Carabineros before walking. Also confirm with the resort operator which sectors are open.
The bus and the road
From Chillán a Rembus bus leaves for the hot springs and passes through the valley; the schedule and fare are in the trip details. Confirm with the company whether in winter it goes up to the resort.
The Carabineros checkpoint on the climb to the resort is in the valley. In winter it runs by hours, and carrying chains is mandatory all year.
